Elbow states that the goal of the writer is to express the mind in a way where opinions are not overwhelming. The words written on paper make the writer authentic from the rest of the group. Elbow sees freewriting as the best way to succeed in a writing class, other than the academic version of just writing words, where freewriting is not used. Elbow constantly uses the classroom setting as an example why freewriting should be used. Students are able to write down their own voice, where the structured uses of writing dissapear. But as the student tries to make an effort of writing a paper without the use of voice, the writer and the class pull away from each other, making a clear distinction of expression through wrting. Elbow thinks this is important for all students to master the art of freewriting so the misconception of writing will not consume the writier, rather, it consumes the reader.

dra08 on paragraph 1:

what do you mean by “the academic version of just writing words”? are you referring to some academic way of freewriting? or how academics normally write? i’m not getting the reference.
